Matching your frame and mat is rarely a good option.

Larger artworks and pieces that have a built in border might look great framed full bleed meaning the artwork goes all the way to the frame s edge.
If you re choosing a brown frame you probably don t want to use a brown mat.
The same goes for a red frame and a red mat.
For instance an 11x14 frame may have a 1 5 wooden profile.
This is the actual size of the window of the frame glass.
If you have a series it s better not to mat.
This simple frame and detailed photo go perfectly well together without a mat.
That s not to say that a mat won t work for larger pieces as well but we may recommend a narrower mat in proportion to the artwork.
If your photo framing project involves a series of photos that are closely related to one another or were all taken on the same day it might be better not to mat.

Commonly oil and acrylic paintings are displayed with a wider wood frame that may or may not.

With float matting hidden spacers are placed underneath the lip of the molding separating the acrylic from the mat to give more of an impression of drama.
If you just put a print into a frame without a mat or spacers contact with the glass can cause sticking buckling newton rings and a variety of other problems.
With a mat it might be perfect for an 8x10 or 8 5x11 print.
